Southern Smothered Chicken: Comfort Food Made With Love

There’s something special about a meal that feels like home. Southern smothered chicken is one of those comforting dishes that brings people together around the table. Tender, seasoned chicken covered in rich homemade gravy makes this a simple Southern favorite that’s full of flavor and made to be shared.

Ingredients

  • 4 chicken thighs or breasts
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Season the chicken with seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and paprika.
  2. Lightly coat the chicken with flour.
  3. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the chicken on both sides, then remove it from the skillet.
  4. Add the sliced onion and cook until softened.
  5. Stir in a small amount of the remaining flour and cook for about one minute.
  6. Slowly pour in the chicken broth, stirring until the gravy begins to thicken.
  7. Stir in the heavy cream and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Return the chicken to the skillet, cover, and simmer until the chicken is fully cooked and tender.
  9. Serve warm with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite Southern sides.
